The Story of Your Personalised Celtic Cross…

This is a piece I cherish deeply in my heart. It all started in a quiet corner of County Galway, where an old Irish Ash tree once stood. Born in circa 1930s, it was rooted in tradition, and a witness to generations of history — while soaking up the spirit of the land.

A few years ago, after a storm, I found it fallen… and something about it felt sacred — as if it still had a story to tell.

When a customer requested something truly special, that same tree became the heartwood of a new creation. I set out to craft something personal, intricate, and steeped in Gaelic heritage — a handcrafted Celtic cross, that would honour their Irish surname and ancestry.

I’ve always been inspired by the stunning craftsmanship of medieval manuscripts like the Book of Kells. I knew that this local Galway Ash would be perfect for this piece, a tree deeply rooted in Irish folklore and tradition.

Not only is this piece unique, but it also carries the history of Ireland within its grain. As each surname is engraved in the traditional Seanchló (old Gaelic) font, I’m reminded of the generations before us who carried these names with pride.

One particular customer shared a touching story — his grandparents emigrated from Ireland to America, bringing their faith and traditions with them. Now, he gifts this cross to his family as a way to reconnect with their Irish roots, a lasting tribute to their lineage.

The Story of a Wooden Love Heart…

These came about after a customer contacted me looking for a unique anniversary gift for their loved-one. They had the idea of a little wooden love heart decoration, and left it up to me for the design. I played around with a few options and decided on the piece shown above. I found a beautiful infinity feather symbol, and added some charming Gaelic typeface. Along with a vibrant red ribbon, I felt all of this was perfect for its symbology.

To me, these wooden hearts signify everlasting love – something that brings humanity together, and is the bright love of our hearts, or ‘Grá Geal mo Chroí’.

Every piece I make seems to have a unique journey. This is what I love about what I do. Like our own personal journeys, it’s amazing how the little steps we take, and the decisions we make, can manifest into something magical.

This creation came about after various people asked me if I made map of Ireland clocks. But it wasn’t until 2022, that I finally got a chance to craft one. After many hours of thought and design, the piece you see above was the final result.

A lovely customer in County Cork commissioned the Irish map wall clock, as a personalised wooden anniversary gift. Seeing how everything turned out delighted both myself, and the recipient! It was a joy to make this, especially after watching the decorative clock hands rotate for the first time – as the piece came to life!

This piece is truly special to me. The wooden serving tray is handmade in Ireland with love, and quality craftsmanship. Not only does the tray display ‘Sláinte’ (in beautiful old Gaelic ‘Bunchló’ font), but it’s also the perfect gift for your loved ones, especially those of Irish decent! The engraved area can be personalised to anything you wish.

Crafted from ebonised Irish Oak (up to 300 years old), and furniture-grade Baltic Birch, to add a little industrial style to the piece.

• More uncommon nowadays throughout the land of Ireland, Oak has strong, distinctive grain (frame). It’s also what many ships  were made from traditionally for centuries.
• The base of this piece is crafted from furniture-grade Baltic Birch ply, a panel of solid layers that form a durable quality base.
• The frame of the tray is turned black, using the fascinating process of Ebonisation. This is done by applying a vinegar & wire-wool solution to the wood. When applied, the solution reacts with the numerous tannins in the Oak, thus transforming the tone in minutes.

This design was the very first of my wooden map range, and it still holds a special place in my heart. It all began when I made a last-minute gift for a friend’s birthday. I could have never imagined that such a simple gesture would shape my journey forever.

The piece was so well received, that I said it was worth fine-tuning and releasing to the public. The response was amazing, as the map deeply struck a chord with people’s hearts — not just in Ireland, but across the globe. With over 30 million Americans, and countless more in Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, proudly claiming Irish ancestry, it became clear that the Irish are everywhere. No matter where life takes us, we always carry a piece of home with us.

Since then, I’ve crafted countless individual pieces for people all over the world — including a map for former U.S. President Joe Biden, engraved with his ancestral homeland of Ballina, County Mayo. A truly humbling commission, and something I could have never dreamed of.

I’ve also continued to learn and grow, always striving for the highest quality craftsmanship. Along with conserving our enchanting Gaelic culture, my mission is to exceed customers’ expectations, by crafting some of the most heartfelt and beautiful wooden gifts in Ireland.

A customer once reminded me: “Everyone comes from somewhere”. Each personalised map reconnects people with their heritage, townland, or family story. Crafting them by hand allows me to share in these journeys — something I feel truly honoured to do.
